Stirred

Late nights up with a newborn means lots of time for reading new books and expanding my list of authors I love. I recently picked up an ebook copy of Stirred, Twisted Fox Book One, by Charity Ferrell and want to talk about it.

  • Genre: Contemporary Romance
  • Heat Level: ❤️❤️❤️❤️
  • Overall Rating: 6/6 Glass Slippers

Dr. Jamie Gentry was once Cohen Fox’s girlfriend’s geeky, younger sister. But in the five years since he last saw her, she’s grown into a beautiful woman. Too bad the history between him and his ex’s family makes him less than thrilled to see her again when she steps through the door at the hospital. The patient in question is Cohen’s five year old son Noah, the same one Jamie’s sister abandoned shortly after birth, the one her parents pushed to adopt from him.

Jamie has been longing to know her only nephew, but his father made it clear he’s uninterested in fostering a relationship between them. Her only in when it comes to building a family is the fact that she’s a doctor and Noah’s sick enough for her to make a house call to follow up on him.

The tension of old wounds begin to melt away, leaving behind a new kind of pull that draws Jamie and Cohen together. But is there too much history between them to make it all work?

I’m usually not one for romances that involve kids, but the reviews were so good on this book, I had to get it. Noah was written really well and didn’t have that stereotypical “precocious kiddo who wants a new mom” vibe that I’ve read before. Ferrell managed to keep him sounding and acting as a normal child, so I was able to focus on the romance.

Cohen and Jamie’s backstory made for a complicated, messy, and painful beginning. They each had their own lives following their dreams, but both were missing something vital only the other could give. I was rooting for them after the first few chapters and just waiting for one of them to give it.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, and since it’s only book one in a five part series, so far, I’ll have plenty to do when I’m up all night.

Publisher’s Weekly Review

Getting a review from Publisher’s Weekly is always such a nail biter. Will the reviewer love it? Hate it? Or ignore the book altogether? I was lucky enough to have them review To Wrangle a Rancher and have a few lovely things to say about book one in The Hollingsworth Sisters series.

McKnight (Falling in Puppy Love) launches her Hollingsworth Sisters series with a steamy if formulaic contemporary romance. After Olivia Hollingsworth is passed over for the role of vice president of her family’s publishing company, she heads to Montana to regroup while writing a feature on the renovation of her late grandmother’s farmhouse for one of the company’s magazines. Olivia’s plans are quashed, however, by the sight of grazing cattle tearing up the property’s rolling fields. Rancher Kit Granger’s abusive father left him with a mountain of debt that has forced him to sell off parcels of his family’s land. Having the use of the grazing pastures around his neighbor’s farmhouse has helped lessen the burden, but this long-standing agreement is thrown into jeopardy by Olivia’s arrival and renovation plans. Kit has no intention of agreeing to her demand that he remove his cows from her fields—not even after Olivia buys a date with him in a bachelor auction. The sexual tension between Olivia and Kit positively sizzles as the animosity between them gives way to heat. Meanwhile the colorful supporting cast, most notably a housebroken calf named Dog, adds charm. The red hot sex scenes and quirky townsfolk elevate this otherwise unremarkable rancher romance into a satisfying romp. (Feb.)

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

Young adult isn’t historically my thing, save for the “classics” like Twilight and The Hunger Games. But To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before on Netflix caught my attention. I watched and found it cute, funny, and the kind of predictable that made it a lovely way to spend an afternoon. Then, after spotting all three books in the series by Jenny Han, I saw it as a sign and bought all three. Now, I’d like to chat about To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

  • Genre: Ya Romance
  • Heat Level: ❤️
  • Overall Rating: 6/6 Glass Slippers

Lara Jean Song Covey is a high school junior with her head in the clouds. Her older sister Margot is off to Scotland for college while her younger sister Kitty is driving her crazy. Lara Jean is quiet and romantic, someone who cries at sad movies and pours her feelings into baking…and letters. Every time she had a crush on a boy and wanted to get over them, she’d write them a love letter and tuck each one in a hat box to never see the light of day. All is well until the letters are sent, and the boys come looking for answers.

Of all the letters that got sent, two are the most problematic. One went to her childhood friend Peter Kavinsky, who is dating her former BFF Gen, and her sister Margot’s ex boyfriend Josh Sanderson. When Josh asks Lara Jean about the letter, she panics and says she’s not into him anymore because she has a boyfriend…Peter. Before she can get her story strait, she and Peter enter into a literal contract to be in a fake relationship. She’ll date him to make Gen jealous and he’ll keep Josh off her back.

As time goes on and Lara Jean and Peter play #relationshipgoals to their peers, the line between reality and pretend becomes blurred. Holding hands in the hallway becomes comforting rather than a way to show off. His notes in class become less about making Gen jealous and more about getting to know Lara Jean. But the contract and real life looms overhead, leaving little room for anything more.

You guys, this book was cute. I know not every character was perfect, but neither are people. Peter was a total jerk at times, but was also more sensitive and thoughtful than you would think. Lara Jean could never verbalize what she wanted, but she was fiercely loyal to her family and had the sort of kindness we look for in others. The growth of their relationship was adorable, the kind of slow burn that was easy to feel as you read. It reminded me of old high school relationships and the bumpy roads they’d take.

Another interesting thing Jenny Han did with To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before was inserting the sorts of problems only faced by Asian Americans. For example, Lara Jean had a rule where she would only dress up as an Asian character on Halloween so no one would guess if she was a Manga character. It was small moments like those that were really poignant to me. Lara Jean wasn’t just a high school girl, she was a biracial high school girl with sets of problems not seen in other YA books with caucasian leads.

Overall, I loved the book and honestly devoured the others in rapid succession. It’s really fun for all ages and was a charming, light read. PS. If you’ve already watched the movie, don’t worry, you’ll still enjoy the book.

Excerpt:

“Come with me. I want to show you something.”

“Sounds mysterious.”

“I will admit I was keeping this a secret, but I’ve made an executive decision to break with Handymen tradition.”

“What will Lacey think?”

“Let’s not go there.” He brought her upstairs, to the room that used to be the master bedroom, the one where several crew members stowed their belongings most days. Michael opened the door. At the far end of the empty room sat a large object, covered in a long tarp. “I’ve been working on something for you.”

“You mean other than renovating my house?”

He grinned. “Remember those old family photos Lacey borrowed from you?”

“Yeah. She said they wanted to include a montage of old pictures in the show introduction.”

“That might have been a slight fabrication. I just needed a way to get some photos from you. Anyway, I was saving this for the big reveal, but I think I want to show you now.” He grabbed the edge of the tarp and pulled, revealing the object hidden beneath it.

It was an old wooden ladder, one he’d found months ago at a salvage yard. He’d decided to repurpose it, turning it into a set of frames for the old photos they’d borrowed. Faces now smiled out from the six gaps between the rungs. Nonna Olivia hugging two blond children, Emily and her brother. Nonna Olivia and her husband on their wedding day. Six photos in total, all part of the heritage Emily so treasured. He hoped she’d like the rustic look of the ladder. Rather than sanding and painting it, he’d left it rough and worn, so that it looked as if it might have been sitting in Nonna Olivia’s toolshed, just waiting to be used. All Michael had done was affix the appropriate hooks and backings and had blown all the photos up to sizes that would fit the spaces.

Emily gazed upon her grandmother’s face. Her chest heaved. She blinked once, then twice. All at once, big, fat tears began to roll down her cheeks. “Michael, it’s…”

“I hope you don’t mind I used the photos. I thought it might be nice for you to have mementos of your grandmother in the finished store.”

“Oh.” Her hand covered her mouth but it shook so much she was unsuccessful at covering her open mouth.

“I hope you like it. You’ve had a shitty week and I thought you could use a pick-me-up. I was supposed to keep quiet about it, so maybe you could keep it under your hat until—”

Emily threw herself at him and wrapped her arms around his torso, cutting off his words and his breath. Only when he hugged her back did he realize how hard she was quivering.

She wasn’t just crying about the old photos.

“It’s okay, Em. Let it out, sweetheart.”

The collar of his shirt grew wet but he didn’t care. Wardrobe had tons of shirts. Besides, she felt good in his arms, all soft and warm. He rubbed her shoulders and the back of her waist, exploring and familiarizing himself with her luscious body. He breathed, drinking in her scent. His nasal cavities had never known such bliss. It was like that first clear breath after a long period of congestion. His fingers were pretty happy too, enjoying the give of her womanly body. It was all he could do not to slide them down, cup her sweet ass, and pull her up against him.

Just not while she was crying over another man.

She lingered in his arms and he did nothing to push her away. In fact, it surprised him how badly he wanted to keep her there, so much so that when Emily finally extricated herself, he wanted to pull her back into his embrace. Instead, he wiped her cheeks of the remaining tears.

“The makeup ladies are going to kill me for making you cry.”

It might have been his imagination, but her tears made her eyes appear even greener. In fact, her entire face seemed a riot of tempting color. Each shade called to him. The crushed roses in her cheeks. Her strawberry lips, so plump and moist. Even the doeskin brown of her freckles fascinated him to no end. He wanted to count them, to kiss and mark them all.

Kissing her made a whole lot of sense right now. Kissing her senseless seemed even better.

Emily’s eyes widened. Her lips parted in invitation. Michael paused, knowing it was wrong, even though every raised hair on his arms told him it was right.

As he debated with himself for a split second, she brushed her lips against his. It was quick and soft, hunger masquerading as something platonic. Even though a spectator might have called it a friendly kiss, he knew the truth. As brief as it may have been, he felt her yield to him, even if just a little.

From the startled look in her eye, Emily knew it too.

She took a step back. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.”

“You’re right. I should have been the one to do it.” Michael licked his lips. “Your lips really do taste like strawberries.”

“Michael, I can’t.”

“I think you just did.”

“You know what I mean.” She waved her hand between their two torsos. “This. I can’t do this.”

“What? Point at my chest?”

“You’re teasing me.”

“Maybe a little. Listen, Em, I understand. As unexpected as that kiss was, as much as I want to taste your lips again, I know it’s too soon.”

“It’s too much, too soon.”

He reached for her hand. “I get it. It’s okay.”

“Thank you.”

“But that doesn’t mean I won’t be spending all my waking hours waiting for the moment I can make it happen again.”

“Michael.”

“Don’t worry. I’d never force the matter. Besides, I enjoyed having you thrust yourself at me.”

“Are you ever going to let me live it down?”

“Not in this century, sweetheart.”

The Survivalist Series

It’s almost Halloween and I’m super pumped, since it’s my favorite holiday. But you know what’s scarier than ghosts, zombies, and witches? EMPs and a hostile takeover that leaves the US crippled. So Spooky. Anyways, I recently found The Survivalist Series by A. American and I have a lot to say.

51LQTJywkDL

Genre: Thriller/Suspense/War Fiction

Overall Rating: 6 Glass Slippers

Morgan Carter is just a regular, American guy who loves his family, his freedoms, and a good glass of sweet tea. He’s on his way home from a short work trip when everything stops. Cars, electronics, planes, laptops, phones…everything with any form of computer in it just dies, all at once. Morgan is that left to go on a long hike through Florida to get home. Luckily for him, and his family, Morgan likes to be prepared. He has guns, solar systems, food, and enough skills to possibly get his family through this crisis. But the fight doesn’t end after book one in this series. Getting home was only a small part of surviving the the destruction of modern society.

Imagine an America where clean water and soap are luxuries and bullets and beans are the new currency. What if gangs roamed free and things like police forces and prisons were no longer in use? Could you survive? Would you have the guns, the food, the power to keep you and yours safe? When Morgan gets home, he needs to both try and keep his family alive as well as fight off all those who weren’t so prepared. There’s a new, rising power who aims to take it all from him, but luckily, he’s got a few good friends in high places to have his back. But when the real enemy might be your own government, is there really any safe place?

IgRSrjW.gif

I’m still reading this eight part series, but I think it’s so good, I wanted to bring some more attention to it. A. American writes simply, but powerfully about what might happen if the power grid in the US is destroyed. So much so, that I’ve given thought to my own ability to keep things together if something like that were to happen in the future. While I may be more prepared than some, it might never be enough. In truth, books like this, that are grounded in facts and military experience, are far scarier than anything else you could read.

I think this book is great for anyone who likes heart pounding danger and learning a few things along the way. It’s available in ebook, paperback, and audiobook if you’re looking for something to keep you wildly entertained during your long commute.

Droughtlander Reading List

Outlander is almost back and soon we’ll be able to watch, take in, dissect, and discuss each episode as they come. But there’s still a month before that and what if your kindle is a little light and your bookshelves are growing bare? I know that feeling and I’m here to help with some more of my favorite novels that Outlander fans might enjoy. To pick up any of these books, just click on the title to take you to their Amazon pages.

London by Edward Rutherfurd

51DQC79Or3L

This is for fans who miss stories that span the decades. This book follows London’s history from the ice age to the present day in the steps of several families. It’s great for history buffs who want some sex, action, and mystery in their reading. It’s a bit of a hefty undertaking, but my trusty paperback copy has been re-read so many times, I think it deserves top slot.

The Winter Sea by Susanna Kearsley

51BXOOsm4cL.jpg

This is an author you’ve probably already heard about and one that Gabaldon actually likes as well. The Winter Sea is a novel about an author named Carrie who goes to Scotland to write a book about the Jacobites and finds out that she’s writing a true story, one that her ancestors lived, without even knowing it at first, in the form of waking dreams. There’s time travel of sorts, a touch of romance, a lot of history, and even more fun.

Into the Wilderness by Sara Donati

51BYrMQNa+L

In 1792 a woman named Elizabeth finds herself unmarried at the age of 20 (gasp!) and moves from her comfortable estate to join her father in the mountains of New York. There she meets a man who lives among the Mohawk people and although her father tries to marry her off to a local doctor, Elizabeth is too headstrong to just sold off like a cow. Soon, she ends up at odds with the local slave owners, her family, and finds herself torn between the live she has the life she wants. Sounds a bit like Claire, doesn’t it?

A Rip in the Veil by Anna Belfrage

51wCUnpN7yL

Somehow, a woman named Alex is thrown from 2002 to 1658 and into the path of a Scottish outlaw named Matthew. Both are confused by the occurrence, but when both of you are basically on the run, it’s easy to take up together. While Alex grieves the lost of coffee, showers, and cars, Matthew begins to grow on her, especially when they begin to try and find out how she ended up back in time. This one is a hit or miss for Outlander fans, who may not enjoy the “younger” voice of the heroine and compare it a bit too much to Gabaldon’s rousing series. But it’s a good read that I think deserves a shot.

My Name is Mary Sutter by Robin Oliveira

510o3a8v+KL._SY346_

In the midst of the Civil War, midwife Mary isn’t okay with staying home in safety as the menfolk fight. She joins the wounded, using her skills to help where she can and learning the realities of war as she goes. She is refused traditional medical schooling, but that doesn’t stop her from getting the guidance of two trained surgeons. This is a story of heartbreak, the horrors of war, and the will to live and succeed when others want you to fail.

Wishing for a Highlander by Jessi Gage

51Mp4-Z6MhL

Melanie is single, pregnant by a guy who ran away, and working in a museum when she daydreams about a hunky, kilted hero to save the day (don’t we all?). Then she’s pulled back in time and thrown into 16th century Scotland where people obviously thinks she a witch. Enter Darcy Keith, who finds himself drawn to the woman his people were about to try. Will Melanie long to return back to her own time, or be happy her wish literally came true?

The Forever Queen by Helen Hollick

41GMWRHNYtL

Emma of Normandy is trapped in a loveless marriage to the King of England in 1002 and finds out that her husband is a terrible ruler. When the Vikings threaten their shores, Emma ends up having to take charge and defend her new home from invasion. But when her husband dies and the Viking king claims everything, Emma had a whole new world to battle with. This author marries the true accounts of Emma of Normandy with the touches of fiction that makes it a great read.

Waterfall by Lisa T Bergren

51Na5EjRVzL.jpg

Along with her sister, Gabi spends every supper being shlepped around archeological sites with her parents. They’re at a dig in Tuscany when she places her hand on a hand print in an ancient tomb. Then, you guessed it, Gabi is thrown back in time and into the arms of handsome Italian knight Marcello. But Gabi’s sister Lia was also pushed back to Marcello’s time and it then lost. Now Gabi must try to survive in the past, fight through her feelings to a man she can never be with, find her sister, and a way home. Now, this is technically a teen book, but it makes for a nice, light read.

A Dance Through Time by Lynn Kurland

51Vmhxkwa4L

Modern day Elizabeth is a failed romance author who has been suffering from writers block. But then dreams come to her of a kilted hero who can save her from herself. She takes a walk in the park, falls asleep by accident, and wakes up in the 1300s. She finds herself in the presence of a feared Scottish lord who has never shown any interest in  women…until her. This is a traditional romance with a bit of action.

Transcendence by Shay Savage

516c5-N-u2L

Here’s one you didn’t expect…caveman romance! That’s right. A caveman is checking his traps one day and comes upon a woman wearing odd clothing and making noises he couldn’t understand. Yes, that woman was sent to the past and instead of a Scottie hottie, she got a caveman. But there’s still a love story and an ending readers all love.

That’s all for this list, but there’s more to see over on our Outlander page HERE!

And if you like all my Outlander posts, you’ll probably love my historical romance series. Set in Victorian England and Scotland and featuring two kilted men and the British woman who try to stay away, you can get Queen of Emeralds HERE and The Amethyst Bride HERE!

Mask of Duplicity

I recently learned about a Scottish historical author named Julia Brannan when she asked for authors to participate in her release party for book five in her Jacobite Chronicles series. She’s basically a self-publishing master, with flawless editing, cover design, and has won numerous awards. Now, I just finished book one in this series, Mask of Duplicity and I have a lot of thoughts…

Genre: Historical Fiction

When sassy Beth Cunningham’s father dies, she’s left in the care of her estranged half-brother Richard, who isn’t exactly the kind of brother one would be pleased to have. This becomes clear when he finds that the family’s funds are tied up in Beth’s sizable dowry. Beth is strong, smart, and quite unlike the soft women that are held in high regard. And if Richard has his way, half-Scottish Beth’s wild ways would be squashed and he would be in complete control of the estates. But our heroine isn’t vanquished so easily.

cdea75dfcdaacf00bf4453a428c3165f.gif

By the time Beth launches into proper society, Richard has shown his dreadful, creepy, true colors, but Beth soldiers on, even meeting a charming man who may be her perfect match. But this isn’t just a book where an English Rose gets the ring and rides off into the sunset. Beth is thrown into a world where everyone has secrets, hidden loyalties, and ways to get what they all truly want; power. When marriage is the only escape and war is on the horizon, can Beth ever find a way to be free?

Even before you reach chapter one, Brannan has set the scene by giving you timelines, character lists, and a promise to keep things as historically accurate around her fictional characters as she can. She certainly delivers on this promise, and I’m reminded of the way Diana Gabaldon, author of the Outlander series, weaves real events around her characters easily, making you almost wonder if the characters are really only a figment of the author’s imagination. As someone with a history degree and an interest in that time period, I found it highly entertaining.

It’s a heavy read that you will will want to really pay attention to and not something you can half take in while on the beach. You need to remember political issues, the motives of the characters, and all the name. But there’s also some guides in the front of the book to make this a bit easier. Overall, I enjoyed this book and the next is on my “to read” list!

Walking in Fire

This book has been sitting in my kindle, waiting to be read for quite some time. But between work, a toddler, and editing my own books, I’ve been terrible neglectful. However, I finally got some time to crack open this lovely read, and let’s just say that it brightened my weekend.

Freckle faced Melia Carson is the first star we truly meet. She’s a young chef and terribly likable, but also terribly heartbroken. She hopes that the warm waters and pure sands of Kona can heal it…or maybe the hot Polynesian man with the golden, tattooed skin would have a better chance of doing in. She sure as hell would let him try, if only she thought the Hawaiian god of a man would be interested.

giphy

David “Malu” Ho’omalu isn’t cruising the island looking for mainland babes on vacation, something he has no problem finding. He’s on a mission to save his people, and plans on using his special skills in order to accomplish his task. Drugs have invaded his peaceful domain and the help of one magnetic, freckled tourist may help him stop the deadly invasion before it’s too late…and maybe help him clear his name in the process.

de1217305587fe85830db3a44946ff32

I enjoy a bit of history and facts with my story, when the plot allows, and it’s clear that Cade has done her research about Hawaiian customs and language. While the location is made up, you still get the feel of the islands with every page. Including the language and culture was done, most importantly, in a very respectful manner.

Overall, this book was literally the perfect one to take to the beach. Why not sit on the sand alongside Melia or swim in turquoise water with Malu, who in my head looks exactly like Jason Momoa? But if you aren’t living seaside, you certainly feel it when you read Walking in Fire. But beside the beautiful scenery, there’s a lot of action and intrigue, making it a bit different than the usual (hot vacation spot+hot guy+hot sex=hot romance). It goes a bit deeper, something I can’t find any issue with! So pick up a copy HERE and enjoy your vacation.
