Genre: Short Story

Overall Rating: 5/6 Glass Slippers

Ian returned home for a bachelor party but things don’t turn out the way he planned. Most of these parties have strippers and all kinds of debauchery but something is off to Ian. This is confirmed when he realizes just who one of the strippers is.

Ian soon realizes that there is a whole lot more going on then just what meets the eye. Sometimes you need to look a little deeper at your friends and the people around you.

I liked this story because it wasn’t something I was used to seeing. First of all, I don’t read a lot of short stories so that was already a new experience for me. But I also don’t read a lot of stories from a man’s point of view unless its a dual romance novel. I liked how the story started out and I liked how Ian looked at the world. Plus, this was a look into a bachelor party! I don’t have much experience with that…well except for the Hangover.

Obviously there are strippers and some graphic moments in the story but nothing that I felt was too intense or cringe worthy. I liked this story and I think it’s a quick read but it definitely leaves you thinking.

Collab/Inspired Look- Mermaid Vibes

COLLAB/INSPIRED LOOK- MERMAID VIBES

IMG_0356

Hey lovelees ♥ I am so excited to bring you this inspired makeup look! I wanted to do something fun and a little bit different. I was definitely feeling the mermaid vibes. This is in collaboration withAKissAtMidnight you can check them out here. They are two talented writers that have a passion for romance novels.

There are certain elements of fantasy that have captured our hearts but what do we really now about them? Mermaids have become a cultural phenomenon. People are selling crocheted mermaid tale blankets, and swim bottoms that cover your legs as if you were a mermaid. But have we stopped to go over what it means to be a mermaid? What they do besides sun bathe on rocks?                                                          ~AKissAtMidnight

Instructions

DSCF0764_picmonkeyed

  1. Begin by taking fishnet stockings and placing them on the side of your face and forehead. This will create a stencil for the scales.
  2. Dab into your favorite shade and press onto the fishnet stockings, repeat with another shade on top to create dimension. I used MUG, Mermaid mixed with Unicorn from the Totally Cute palette. You can make the scales as dramatic as you want.
  3. Prime eyelids with any eyeshadow primer. Using a flat shader brush, I pressed in MUG Mermaidon the center of lid and blended it into the crease and upwards into the outer V creating a wing.
  4. Then I took the shade Clover and blended that into my crease. I wanted a pigmented crease so I went in about 3x with the same shade to get my desired look.
  5. For my outer V, I wanted it to be a little more dramatic so I used the shade Storm Cloud to deepen it up and make that wing more intense.
  6. Blend, I took the two colors from my eyelids Mermaid & Clover and smudge them on my lower lashline to pull the look together.
  7. Apply your favorite foundation & conceal areas you normally would.
  8. Add a cooler tone blush, I used MUG, Secret Admirer.
  9. Add highlight, I wanted to create a rainbow effect highlight. I used MUR Blush Goddess Palette which contains 4 highlighters and 4 blushes. I used the first 3 shades mixed and applied them to my cheekbones, nose, cupid bow, inner corners.DSCF0765_picmonkeyed
  10. Last to finish off the look! I thought metallic lips would look really cool so I used MAC Violetta as a base and added Wet n Wild, Indigo Your Own Way for dimension.

Final Look!

A Little Mermaid History….

Mermaids bring their victims to the bottom of the oceans to die. Some legends say that mermaids do this to suck the life out of the sailors while others say that they do it for fun or to protect their home. Need another pop culture reference? Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides the same thing almost happened except one of them had a heart. She couldn’t let Sam Claflin die. Well I don’t blame her because he is gorgeous.

ariel-blue-disney-funny-Favim.com-2725710

So other than Ariel, and the mermaid from Pirates, what are some other mermaid legends that don’t end with Davy Jones’ locker. Well, the Merrow, as the Irish call them, lived along the coast and had beautiful green hair. They would also lure men to them but not to kill them. But rather to bring them to their kingdom and live together. The Merrow just want what most women want…a good looking sailor to stand by their side. They were believed to have magical powers, and if you caught them on a good day (like all women, they were known to have a bad day every now and again) they wouldn’t bring harm to the sailors. There are also Cornish mermaids who are said to have magical powers such as healing or discovering thieves. These mermaids have passed down these powers to humans over the years.

All in all, Mermaids, like everything else, have good and bad sides. People will always be fascinated by them and they will continue to influence our pop culture one book or movie at a time.

Here is a list of a couple mermaid books that you could check out if the idea of brushing your hair with a dinglehopper or using a clam shell bra still lights a fire within your soul.

Mermaid by Carolyn Turgeon

The Mermaid’s Sister by Carrie Ann Noble

The Mermaid’s Mirror by L. K. Madigan

Sailor Twain: or The Mermaid of the Hudson by Mark Siegel

The Braille Club Undone

Hey, everyone! Remember the past two Braille Club books? We’ve read, and reviewed, the first two in the series; The Braille Club and The Braille Club Unbound. Now, we have The Braille Club Undone, the third installment of the series by JA Kerr.

index

Heat Level: ♥♥♥♥♥♥

Overall Rating: 6/6 Glass Slippers

Genre: Romantic Erotica

As I was surprised before, with the last two books in the series, Kerr has managed to combine the world of erotica with an enthralling storyline. The multiple points of view can be a bit much, at times, but adds to the story. So, let’s just get into what just a few of the cast members have going on in the third Braille book. Everyone is pretty entwined this time around, so paying attention is a must!

Benedict and Siena are as sickeningly in love as always and happy with their little family. They’ve stepped back from the club a bit as they heal from the events of the past year. They’re on the back burner for most of the book which is fine by me, since the drama surrounding some of the other couples is more than enough to satisfy. But, by the end, they’re back in the spotlight for more reason than one.

Newcomers Simon and Tess are show hosts and sex addicts. On the outside they seem committed to their marriage, but both step outside of it, often. When Simon turns his wandering eye to Anna, Tess becomes worried for the first time in a while. But Simon’s not exactly a prize of a man.

giphy

Good old Guy is back again, feeling initially guilty about shirking his duties at the club for his affair with Anna, is now in a relationship with her. He knows some things about Simon which makes him bristle when he sees Anna and Simon together. Anna is still reeling over the end of her marriage to Robert when she finds herself as Simon and Tess’s legal representation. While she’s still devoted to Guy, Simon has a sexual aura around him that she finds hard to ignore.

Virinder is another new Braille Club member. He is being shoved into marrying Noor, a woman he’s only met once who gives him the creeps. But marrying her is better than dealing with his bully of a father. Noor comes from a less than wealthy family, but her beauty has landed her a pliable fiance; Virinder. She’s cunning and vicious when it comes to her goals. But she also has a dark, and sad, past that might have something to do with her current plans.

Once again, Kerr builds up to dramatic crescendos full of twists and turns. What is Noor really after? What happens between Simon and Anna? And where’s Nick? You know, Siena’s crazy-ex husband who wants her dead? This book is so involved and winding, but a wild ride all the same. I’m sad to see the end of this book, but Kerr made sure to go out with a bang and an awesome set up for the final installment.

Finding Fraser

As promised, here’s my review of Finding Fraser by KC Dyer. I was excited to hear about this novel and even more excited when I was able to find the time to read it. It’s the story of a 29 year old woman named Emma who loves Outlander and runs to Scotland to find her own Jamie Fraser. Living the dream.

Heat Level:♥

Overall Rating: 4/6 Glass Slippers

Genre: Blogging Romance

So, the prospect of 30 is tough when you’re looking for love and Jamie Fraser is the only man who would fit the bill. Then again, what’s not to love? He’s devoted, strong, smart, noble, a generous lover, and sex in a kilt. But, I digress; Emma is pretty much working with very little cash and decides to trace the route Claire took in Scotland in search of her own Highlander. She meets several men, most of whom have you guessing, ‘will he be the one?’ until almost the end. She’s awkward, and struggling, which makes her relatable, and she explores with a sense of detailed wonder that I think is very understandable as an American in Scotland for the first time.

giphy

It’s written, partially, in blog format, which Emma keeps to regale her readers of her search for her Jamie. It is slightly reminiscent of Bridget Jone’s Diary, one of my all-time favorites. That made it a little bit more of a fast read, good for the beach or pool, as it isn’t a complicated story, nor one that requires much involvement. Just don’t go in expecting a grand romance, mega-humor, or the undeniable love of the true Jamie and Claire. But, then again, can we ever find a love so grand?

Jail House Rock

So not long ago, I reviewed Pain by Amanda Mackey and it was one of my favorite new finds. Now that Mackey has a new book out, I was jumping to review. Her new book is called Defending Jagger and no it doesn’t have anything to do with Mick Jagger…

Defending Jagger (Search & Seek Book 1) by [Mackey, Amanda]

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Heat Level: ♥♥♥♥

Overall Rating: 5/6 Glass Slippers

One of the first things that you need to know is that Jagger is his first name. Second, he is in jail for murdering his father. Third, he loves his brother, who has down syndrome, more than anyone in the world. They were abused by their alcoholic throughout their life. Now, all he can do is write about it in his ridiculous creative writing classes at the jail. There is just one problem… the teacher.

Rosalind, Rose, is a creative writing teacher who wants to save her students in any way she can. She believes that when the prisoners express themselves, they can feel a kind of release. But when she stares at Jagger, Rose wants a completely different kind of release. It is more than that though. She reads his writing and realizes his deep dark secret that convinces her that Jagger is innocent.

Despite his constant threats and his intimidating form, Rosalind begins the journey of trying to exonerate him. But what happens if he doesn’t want to get out. Will he spurn her help? Is he willing to risk the most important relationship to him? Or will Rose ruin everything because she insists that she knows what’s best?

I studied criminal justice in college so I am always a fan of anything looking at the criminal justice system. At the same time, it totally hurts my soul that it was so corrupt. I know that is a reality sometimes but it still makes me sad.

One of the things that I thought Mackey did well was the writing exercises. Not only is this book in dual point of view, but she also has different written assignments from the prisoners. But none of the writing styles are the same. The writing assignments differ from the types of voices, and the narrative writing in the book. I had no problem telling the points of views apart or differentiating between the different writing styles. I give Mackey a lot of credit because I, for sure, would have gotten myself confused.

So what didn’t I like? I thought that Rose was kidding herself for a while. She maintained that she wanted to help Jagger because of a need to right an injustice. But it seemed to me that she wanted to help him because she was attracted to him and didn’t want to believe he was a criminal. This was a little annoying to me. However, it didn’t deter me from liking Rose. She did mean well.

The first half of this book goes down with almost no sexual interaction at all. Jagger is in jail so it’s not like they have a whole lot of opportunities to go at it. But the language is still a little vulgar and when things do happen, it gets a lot more vulgar. This seems to be Mackey’s writing style and I think she does it well without going too far.

You should consider this book but beware of your facial expressions! Someone is going to know exactly what you’re reading if you don’t keep it under control.

Character Interview about Ian:

I see you played baseball as a child, what position did you play?

Wow, Umm..first base? I mean it was the 90’s they had us rotate everywhere to get a feel for where we were best suited. In the off season I liked to play first or third base. Second always got me really anxious. Anything to get that participation trophy ya know?

Why did you stop?

Honestly because I wasn’t good enough for a scholarship? I mean why does anyone quit playing sports as a kid? I had interests in other places, the cost was higher than my dad was willing to pay and it just kind of fell out of “coolness” in our neighborhood.

Why did you decide to be a lawyer?

I was good at it? I mean I love a good debate, and the drive to help people was always there. Something about the prestige of defending people in court or putting bad guys away appealed to my inner child I guess. Look when you go to college, despite what your teachers and the internet will tell you…if you want to make money you have to find a way for your passions to pay your bills. For me it was law. I was never cool enough in college to be a party kid, and I didn’t have a huge identity crisis like some people do.

What kind of law do you want to study?

Hahaha. Well that’s the clinch now isn’t it? What we think we want, and what we really need are rarely the same thing. That being said, I’m considering public defending back in Piedmont. The high paying lifestyle of a California private lawyer doesn’t seem to fit me. Especially after that night we partied. I really think I could do more good at home then out there.

What did you major in in college?

It’s boring and kind of embarrassing actually. Psychology. Pretty average or normal for most kids, and its not a slight against that field at all. At the time I thought I wanted to become a counselor or a social worker but during my sophomore year I got disillusioned with the prospect of failing a patient. Instead I finished strong but started to focus on the law instead.

Why do you know the Twilight story? Are you secretly an Edward Cullen fan?

Twilight? Because I’ve endured a shopping trip to Hot Topic in the last decade. Also I read the first book on a REALLY long GreyHound ride home from a music festival my Freshman year. It was wedged between two seats and I was sick of staring out the window. I figured the worst that could happen is I’d secretly love it. Turns out, it was mediocre and I survived. As for Cullen? Eh, I mean hindsight’s 20/20 right? I’d consider myself Team Edward if I had to join one but to be honest I found him pretty boring. over 100 years old and no backstory? No thanks, I’d rather hang with Louie or Lestat if vampires were my scene.

What is another philosophy you only tell yourself?

Probably the tenants of Buddhism. Life comes in cycles, and I think I can help improve life around me if I apply myself. Boring, I know. But it’s simple. Nature tends to take the easiest route to a goal.

Are you seeing anyone now?

Umm…no? I mean, look I’d like to say I had someone but life is at a cross roads right now. I don’t need to clutter up my life, or anyone else’s right now ya know? That being said, I would like to start seeing women again if any in the area are available and don’t mind take out.

Is there anything you wish you could say to Kristen?

Yeah. OH yeah. Let’s start with “I’m sorry for being an ass that night. If you have time I’d like to catch up…this time sober, and less dramatic for both of us.” To be fair I can’t get her out of my head, but I don’t understand why.

Why do you think you never tried to get into contact with her after she left?

Because we were kids? I mean, how many kids pre-facebook stayed in contact with their friends from middle school? People grow apart, life carries on. You develop layers to your personality that separate you from others. That’s probably why things came to a head like they did.

The Way To Her Heart

Here’s a new one for you; a twisted teen drama with a dash of romance and killer cooking skills. The Way To Her Heart by Amy Reece really gets down and dirty with what it’s like growing up in a troubled home and the complicated ways young relationships can pull at a couple. I wasn’t sure what I was going to get, going in, but I was more than pleasantly surprised.

Heat Level:♥

Overall Rating: 6/6 Glass Slippers

Genre: Suspenseful Teen Romance

Bernie lives a tough life. The only child of a drug addict mother with a long list of boyfriends, she often leans on her friend Gabby for support through the hard times. But, Gabby’s been hanging with an increasingly sketchy crowd and, when she goes missing, everyone seems to think that she’s just run away. However Bernie, who now lives in her car after one of her mom’s boyfriend’s gets too handsy, thinks there’s something more going on, and no one will listen to her.

tumblr_nlipujBaoh1sefhjoo1_400.gif

Josh has been paired with Bernie for a class assignment. The pair will act as a married couple, something Josh doesn’t find unappealing. However, he did have something keeping him away from his fake wife, his real girlfriend, Kayleigh. He also has a lot of pain in his life; a series of tragic deaths have left him wounded and unable to relate easily to his peers, something he used to excel at as a rich, former, football player.

They are woven into each others lives through a series of events that force them together. Well, maybe ‘force’ is the wrong choice of words. They need each other for the events ahead. Gabby’s still missing, Bernie’s mom is still a mess, and high school is tough when you’re just trying to get by until graduation. Together they make an odd, but still strangely complimentary, pair. Both have secrets and darkness in their lives, and work hard to appear strong on the outside.

Reece was able to put real feeling into her characters and highlight the growing epidemic of missing, and homeless, children. It’s not very often you read a book to be entertained and come out of it with a lesson. There’s also a nice little addition in the end of the book. You see, Josh is a passionate cook and Reece has added a lovely little recipe section in the back that features all of Josh’s best dishes. Certainly a tasty read.
