Breaking Down Sydney

It seems to be sequel week here at A Kiss At Midnight Reviews because I’m here with another one for you. Not long ago, we read Shades of Sydney by Brittney Coon. There she met Jason and stopped her alcohol fueled one night stands to actually let a boy in. Spoilers if you haven’t read the first book! Find out what happens in Breaking Down Sydney

Heat Level: ♥♥♥♥

Genre: Contemporary Romance

Overall Rating 5/6 Glass Slippers

I love sequels but hate reviewing them because I feel you are limited with what you can say. This will be a shorter review than normal.

Sydney had her list of summer boys. She would party all night, bang whoever looked right, and then slink on home by the moonlight. But now she is back in school and ready to get serious. Though there is one problem, Jason lives in a whole different state. Sydney just started believing in relationships in the first place, now she has to believe in a long distance one?

6357465290752541531504342562_17

Jason, the true hero of this story, doesn’t let Sydney doubt anything. He is there for her, in more ways than one, and keeps reminding her what they have to fight for. But will it be enough for Sydney? What happens when the party gods start calling her? Will she answer or will she turn to Jason when tragedy strikes?

Sydney is one of those characters that makes it hard to love her. You want to scream and yell at the book because you become so invested in the relationship that you NEED Sydney to make the right choices. Jason touches your heart so much and you just want him to be happy with Sydney.

Happy surprise, Hunter and Amelia, the best friends of Jason and Sydney are back and I’m thrilled. They provide a beautiful foil and I think that Coon was very clever to set her story up this way.

As for the sex scenes, again, Coon doesn’t disappoint! But remember, Coon’s scenes are not for the faint of heart. You need to be prepared for a Sydney Sex Scene which is different from ones that you’ve red before. Remember, she is a player and knows her way around the bedroom.

I love this series and I hope that you take the time to enjoy it too. Book 3 review, Piecing Together Sydney, will be posted next!

Her Confession

We’ve already read, and reviewed, the first in The Black Door Trilogy, His Confession. Now, I’d like to introduce you to S.Valentine’s latest in the series, Her Confession. But, as always in a series, this review will contain spoilers, so if you haven’t read His Confession, yet, please do before reading on!

Genre: Romantic Erotica

Darion and Gabi are back in action and better than before, having started a meaningful relationship, but there’s the shadow of his exwife Eva looming over them, complicating their attempt as stability. Gabi’s jealousy over Eva makes her realistic and excitingly likable. Who among us hasn’t felt a bit uncomfortable when an ex pops into the picture? Oh, there’s also the fact that Darion used to bang all the dancers at his club. Obviously, this gives Gabi, and us readers, a lot to worry about.

tumblr_n7hmz9qQwt1qj4315o1_500

Darion, the lovable cad, admits that Eva is his complete match; a dirty fuck, equally as devious, and ruthless in their shared business. He even finds himself altering a bit when confronted with her, his mind drifting away of squeaky-clean Gabi and towards sultry Eva who was never afraid to be kinky. And Eva knows it. She can smell his arousal and uses it to her advantage as she makes it clear that she’s in town to stay. As you read the book you wonder who Darion will choose, what will become of the club, and what secret Gabi is hiding.

This book, like the last, is written in dual POV, giving us some insight into the feelings and motivations of both Gabi and Darion. Not to say that Valentine doesn’t give us plenty of tension and uncertainty to sink our teeth into. Overall, I found this book way more involved and enjoyable than the last. Probably because I went into it invested in Gabi and Darion’s relationship and I was dying to know where the cliff hanger from His Confession left us. Once again, I suggest this series to readers who are dipping their toes into the world of erotica. It’s super spicy, but still gives you a lot of developed characters, as well as a great story line.

EXCERPT:

That rat bastard! She thought as she watched him stroll out of the room just as though nothing had happened. As if he hadn’t just gotten her so turned on that she thought she’d spontaneously combust and then just…left.

Sofia didn’t think about what she would have done if he’d tried to have sex with her. That would just ruin the fury she was currently riding. She should be relieved he hadn’t tried to force her. She should have been, logically speaking, but she had to admit to herself her overheated body was ready to beg for release and that her traitorous hormones were killing the rational part of her brain. Sofia knew it was crazy, but all she could think about right now was that the most satisfying way to get some relief was under her sexy captor. It was an issue that only got worse as he walked back into the room with a tray of food and all that beautiful, tanned bare skin.

“Here, let me help you sit up so you can eat,” he said, putting the tray down on the nightstand and moving closer, “Or would you rather wash up and use the bathroom first?”

“Bathroom first, please,” she said immediately, thinking she could follow his lead and get some satisfaction while cleaning up.

But clearly her eagerness must have given her away because he raised one eyebrow in challenge.

“Okay, but you have ten minutes to shower, and you are not allowed to touch yourself other than to get clean―am I understood?” he said in a firm tone as he leaned forward and undid her wrists.

“You’re going to watch me?” she asked, not quite certain if she was offended or turned on at the prospect. She wondered for a second why his firm tone seemed to excite her more than it should have.

“Do you want me to watch you?” he whispered low next to her ear, causing awareness to spread through her entire body.

Sofia was a little breathless at the thought of putting on the same show for him as he did for her, but in the end, her pride won out over the wanton need she felt inside.

“No,” she barely answered, and it sounded weak even to her ears.

His deep chuckle at her answer made her nipples peak even more, and she was almost disappointed when he leaned back and pushed the timer on his watch.

“You’ve got ten minutes, Sofia. Then I come in and get you.”

Sofia had never used the washroom and showered so fast in all her life, she got done with barely a minute to spare as she put her bra and underwear back on and then wrapped herself in a big fluffy towel before she walked back out into the room.

“You can keep the towel until you’ve eaten, then it’s off,” he said once he saw her.

She’d take that small win, and she took her sweet ass time eating as well until he finally took the tray away after she’d spent five minutes chewing a single piece of melon.

“Now are you going to make this difficult on both of us or are you going to behave?” he said as he motioned toward the wrist cuffs once again.

She thought about it, but there was nothing she could do against his superior strength, so she begrudgingly laid back against the padded headboard and raised her wrists.

“Why are you doing this?” she asked quietly. “I told you everything I know already.”

“Well, I’ll see about that soon enough, won’t I?” was all he said in reply as he fastened the cuffs and picked up the tray before he left the room.

****

By the time Eitan had gotten the kitchen cleaned up from breakfast and returned to the bedroom, he was already half hard from replaying how she’d looked watching him come in the shower. He thought about putting on a pair of jeans, but why bother? He certainly wasn’t ashamed for her to see how she affected him and she sure as hell didn’t seem to be put off by his body, so he may as well use that to his advantage, right?

“Ready for the ankle cuffs?” he asked as he entered the room.

He saw her swallow hard and move her legs tighter together.

“Why do you have to?” she asked with a worried look. “Are you going to touch me?”

“You don’t want me to touch you?” he challenged, already knowing her body didn’t have any arguments.

“Of course I don’t want you to touch me!” she answered, clearly trying to sound offended that he’d suggest such a thing, “I don’t even know your name!”

“Well, that’s easy enough to remedy,” he said as he placed one knee on the bed and pulled up the first ankle cuff. “My name is Eitan. Now give me your leg, Sofia.”

He could tell she was surprised he’d given her his name, and to be truthful, he was a bit surprised by that himself. But the more he thought about his name on her lips as she moaned her pleasure, the harder his cock got. He was doing all sorts of things with this little captive that seemed to be breaking his rules, and Eitan wasn’t sure he really cared.

When she tentatively placed her little foot in his hand, he quickly attached the cuff and then slowly ran his fingers over the softness of her skin. Clearly she waxed her legs as the skin was still supple and hair free. That thought made him more aware of the noticeably smooth skin under those pretty purple panties, and his mouth watered as he imagined how soft it would feel under his tongue. As he fastened the second cuff and her legs moved further apart, it was all he could do not to crawl up her body and relieve her of those panties just as he’d fantasized about doing in the shower this morning. It was then that he finally had to admit to himself that this interrogation was probably going to be more difficult for him than it was going to be for her…because his self-control was already bucking to be let loose.

The Virgin Queen

Not long ago, we were afraid of Elves, Demons, and Faeries when we read Heir to the Sun by Jennifer Allis Provost. Now we are back with the review of her second book, The Virgin Queen. This is going to be a little shorter because I don’t want to give too much away in case you consider reading the first book. Possible spoilers.

Overall Rating 5/6 Glass Slippers

The book takes place when Asherah has been the queen for eight centuries. This is of course due to the fact that the demon Mersgoth, the long thought dead creature, attacks again. So Asherah does what she does best and goes out to fight for her kingdom. She is just missing one thing that she had last time, her friend Harek is no longer on her side.

He has decided to team with with the dark Fae to fight against the elves. Those are the same elves that Asherah feels are her family. Leran, the king of the elves and the closest thing to a son that Asherah, is in danger. But will she realize what Harek is doing? Will she be able to stop the dark fae again? Now that she has two different battle to fight, will the mighty Asherah finally fall?

Then there is Finley. He is a lowly shopkeeper, but Asherah is always loving (except on the battlefield) and decides to give him a chance. Soon she realizes that he is a whole lot more than just a shopkeeper. He is soon becomes a hunter and an important part of the army and maybe a whole lot more to Asherah. That is if Aelomar, the main hunter in the army, doesn’t get there first.

Love, deceit, conflict, kings, rulers, demons…This book has so much going on that it can be hard to keep up at times. I had the same problem with this book, that I had with the second. The names are all very close and sometimes that confused me. But at the end of the day, Asherah is such a dynamic character that it is hard not to be sucked in. She is real, as real as a fairy queen can be, and her issues are also near and dear to so many readers.

How hard is it to be a queen when all you want is love but you can’t find someone who loves you for you? Power and lust tend to blind people and you end up alone more than you want. At the same time, she turns that insecurity into power and fights with men and demons like the most terrifying warrior of all time.

I have really enjoyed this series and the world that Provost has created. I’d recommend this book to anyone who loves darker fantasy dripping with romance. Make sure you take your time to read through it because it may take a minute to get into the story but I promise it will be worth it!

Outlander Jewels

Caution: all Outlander posts may contain some spoilers for people who haven’t read the books. So, if you’re strictly a show fan, or haven’t had the chance to read far into the series, this post might contain minor spoilers. Be warned!

As the book readers might remember, gemstones can allow you to safely travel through the standing stones, and the other portals around the world. But, since it’s not real, none of us are about to take grandma’s ruby necklace and travel to 18th century Scotland (sorry, Nana, your jewelry would be gone as hell). Still, who doesn’t love a little bling bling in their lives? Here’s some of the more relevant, and a few fun, jewelry pieces I found where you can show your Sassenach pride! BTW, some of the pieces vaguely reference things that happen in the books that TV watchers might not be aware of, so if the slightest spoiler is upsetting, look no further!

Claire’s Wedding Ring (Book)

aa_clairesring

Claire’s book ring from Jamie is much different than the simple one given to her on the show. In Outlander, the ring is described as having a, “wide silver band, decorated in the Highland interlace style, a small and delicate Jacobean thistle bloom carved in the center of each link.” The Author’s Attic has several pieces inspired by different classic authors, this ring being one of them.

Claire’s Wedding Ring (Show)

il_570xN.1049799213_owsg

This little number is a dead ringer for the ring we saw on the show, made from one of the keys to Lallybroch. As beautiful as the book ring is, I feel like this one really captures the Highland side of Claire; rugged and beautiful. Get it here from Etsy.

Claire’s Crystal Necklace

il_570xN.1019277495_hdce

Ya’ll remember how Master Raymond gave Claire the necklace that detects poison? DBaker Jewelry carries a version that’s pretty darn similar to the one that saved Claire’s life. Did I mention it also comes in black? You can have both and wear the dark one for when you want to look particularly “La Dame Blanche”.

Brian Fraser’s Ruby Ring

il_570xN.806295618_a1zt

On Jamie and Claire’s wedding day, Jamie used his father’s ring as a placeholder during their vows. Finding a ring that matched the cabochon ruby ring for less than a pretty penny is harder than you would think! But here’s one I imagine is pretty similar to the gem that Claire used to travel.

Ellen’s Pearl Necklace

il_570xN.639442311_pk84

Jamie’s mama Ellen was one hot lady that many a man pined over. For her own wedding to Jamie’s dad, MacRannoch gave it to her as a gift. Jamie passed it on to Claire, and now you can have your own for fancy dinner parties and Highland weddings.

Brianna’s Bangle

aa_briannasbracelet

For a more subtle approach to your obsession, here’s where you can get Brianna’s bracelet, which was given to her by Roger and says “I love you a little…a lot…passionately…not at all” in French.

Fergus’s St. Dismas Medallion

As the saint of repentant thieves, the St. Dismas medallion is the perfect piece for our favorite pickpocket. Do you know someone with light fingers and an adorable mop of curly hair? Pick them up one here!

 Teeny Books

I love jewelry, books, Outlander, and miniature things as much as the next person, so this necklace is the perfect way to wear our mutual obsessions loud and proud! Get a stack of these wee faery books here!

Darling Vows

il_570xN.1022194218_fec3

There’s something about Jamie’s wedding vows that tickle my fancy. Just reading them is enough to give you chills and this necklace displays some of the most poignant of pledges.

 “Dinna Fash Sassenach”

il_570xN.853876605_p08m

Aren’t those some words you want a hot Scot whispering in your ear while you cuddle before the fire in your Scottish estate? Here’s a reminder that you can keep with you, always, to be as cool, calm, and collected as our favorite English lady.

Sarah and I both have books out now, so if you like our posts, you’ll probably love our books! First Semester is a thrilling college romance that you can get HERE. Queen of Emeralds is a historic romance set in the highlands that you can get HERE.

Playing At Love Rogue 2

Not too long ago, we did a post about the book Tangled Up In You by Lara Ward Cosio. This is the review for book number 2, Playing At Love. It picks up where book 1 stopped. If you didn’t read book 1, then that’s okay because all the books are set up to be standalones.

Conor and Gavin are desperately trying to find a way to still play together after the disastrous affair. Gavin, like he always does, puts his hurt and pain into his music and Conor feels it is his penance to play the ballads explaining just how much he hurt his best friend. But life isn’t back to normal.

Sophie, after having just enough of Gavin’s attitude, has decided that she would rather be on her own. She is back to modeling and even buys herself a house in New York. To the outsider looking in, she has completely moved on from Gavin. Well, at least that’s what she wants the tabloids to think.

Gavin, now clean and in better control (sort of) of his emotions, has decided it is time to win Sophie back. After all, what is success and fame when you have no one to share it with? However, Sophie does not go running back into his arms. I was so glad to see that she makes him work for her heart. She isn’t ready to jump back into the crazy emotional roller coaster that comes with being with Gavin. In fact, she isn’t sure if she will ever be ready.

Now poor Conor, is back with his ex Colette, no Ward has still not gotten rid of her, and they are engaged. Conor feels he has to try to make things work with Colette to prove to Gavin that his feelings for Sophie are no longer real or any problem. There is just one problem, Felicity.

Felicity was one of the gang back when everyone was in high school (nice bread crumbs Ward). I really love it when a series pulls things from other books. I always think it’s genius. She and Conor used to be pretty hot and heavy back when hot and heavy meant awkwardly pawing at each other on someone’s couch in the basement and trying desperately to convince yourself that you really did enjoy those five minutes of sex. But Felicity wasn’t dumb. She new the band was going to make it one day and never wanted anything more than a physical relationship with Conor for fear he’d break her hear.

Well don’t worry boo. Someone already broke her heart. Her husband divorced her for a terrible reason. I won’t tell you the reason but he is one of the biggest jerks in book history! Now she is back home and Conor can’t seem to stay away from her. But that is just familiarity right? He couldn’t possibly have feelings for her? No, he was only ever in love with Sophie right?

9839187.gif

Will these love triangles be broken or turned into a neat circle between two people? Will they chose easy over happy? Will they confuse convenience over passion?

This, like the first, was a great book. I enjoyed it from page one and I can’t wait for book 3 following Shay. However, the one thing that drove me a little crazy was the constant flashbacks. I had just read the book so I knew exactly what had just happened and I found the flashbacks to just be annoying. However, if you took a break between the books (like normal people do) then I don’t think you would find them as frustrating.

I have loved Conor since book 1 and it was fantastic learning more about him. He is truly my book boyfriend for right now and I’d fight anyone who tried to claim him!

Ward, in her fashion, does draw a veil over her sex scenes and they aren’t really there so it is perfect for someone looking for a less raunchy kind of romance.

Stay tuned for updates on book 3!
