What Happens in the Castle

This is it, the last installment of my What Happens series set in the Scottish Highlands has a cover, a release date, and is now available for preorder!

He’s a Scotsman through and through with the kilt and loch-side manor to prove it

Savannah Adelson spent years sacrificing her midwife career for what she thought was love. Now that she’s kicked her cheating ex to the curb, she’s transforming her long-forgotten dream into a thriving business. Amid her new patients, she manages to travel to Scotland to be a bridesmaid in her college friend’s wedding only to meet the cousin of the groom, a tall shot of whisky in a tartan glass.

Rhys Mackinnon has grown restless and is eager to find his next role in life, whatever that may be. When he meets Savannah, he’s all too happy to make that role her personal tour guide. He ends up playing boyfriend too after her ex shows up unannounced.

When the fictional relationship begins to feel real, Savannah’s torn between the fire she feels for Rhys and the passion she has for her career. No matter what she decides, someone will end up hurt, because what happens in the castle doesn’t always stay there.

The Inheritance

Today, I’d like to present to you Irina Shapiro’s first ever book, The Inheritance. Since The Inheritance was written, Shapiro has published dozens of heart pounding, tear jerking, stories of loss and survival, and it’s exciting to see where everything began.

  • Genre: Historical and Contemporary Romance
  • Narration Rating: 4/6 Glass Slippers
  • Story Rating: 6/6 Glass Slippers
  • Heat Level: ❤️❤️

In 2010 Katie Price is stunned when a man she never met leaves her a brewery and a castle in Scotland. She thought her grandfather had been dead for years, but as she goes to Scotland to inspect her inheritance with the help of local lawyer Danny, she learns more about herself than she ever thought possible.

In 1744 Isobel McBride enters an arranged marriage that leaves both parties miserable. Her husband is a careless brute who loves another and she craves the affection she thought she’d one day have. But another man offers her his heart, the entire future of the clan is in danger from more than just the coming war.

Two women two hundred and fifty years apart, brought together by a pile of love letters and a castle filled with memories.

It’s always so exciting to see how Shapiro writes her time hopping style of work. Each series and standalone book flip between worlds, connecting through memories, second lives, or faded letters in a hidden alcove. The methods she uses never grow stale and I’m always thrilled to see a new book in her collection.

I did have some issue with the narration. I think Wendy Wolfson spoiled me in her other work with Shapiro’s Echoes From the Past series and it was easier to find fault with the narrator in this book, particularly when it came to the Scottish accents. But as the book went on and I was drawn deeper into the story, it was easier to ignore.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and wish there was more of Katie’s story out there, particularly when it comes to her handsome Scottish lawyer.

Scottish Stone Box Set

It’s no secret that Kelsey McKnight writes steamy historicals that will get your kilts in a twist, but now all four of the books in The Scottish Stone Series are available in a box set! For a limited time, you can preorder it HERE for only $0.99! Here’s a reminder of what takes place in each novel so you can see if you’re ready to escape into the Highlands.

Charlotte was born into a life of leisure with a father who always let her do as she pleased, until it came time for her to marry. He wishes to make an alliance with his business partner, an old man who is only interested in a silent and obedient broodmare. Charlotte is neither of those things, and when a Scottish nobleman offers her sanctuary in his Highland castle, she flees London. Now she’s not only running from a man who will see her wed by any cost, but her own growing feelings.

Penelope enjoys being a proper young lady and basking in the fruits of her father’s large department store. All that’s missing is the picture perfect husband, of which she has her pick of. One stands out. He’s tall, dark, handsome and a shipping mogul that has the connections to keep her father’s store in luxury goods. But there’s another who sparks something wild within her. Her comes to her in a blur of shadow and tartan, making her question if the picture perfect life is really what she wants.

Flora is a dreamer by nature, and has her romantic eye set on a particular warrior under her brother’s charge. Much older and sporting a wicked scar, he’s not exactly meant for a Scottish noble lady and her brother refuses the match. When Flora schemes to make her beloved marry her, it goes terribly wrong and she’s forced to flee to London to hide her shame. There, a familiar face offers understanding and an an unconditional care she never dreamed of. But the past never stays hidden and blood will spill over it.

Gwen is not one for romance, turning to numbers and accounting as her steadfast form of completion. When a marriage proposal comes by letter from the hand of a Spanish prince, she accepts. Practically, he’s the perfect man who will allow her the breadth to travel and will send a significant bride price. There’s just one problem…Gwen doesn’t speak Spanish. She entrusts a Portuguese captain who has taken safe harbor on her brother’s coast as a tutor, as he claims his Spanish is impeccable. But as her date to sail to Spain grows closer, Gwen realizes there may be more to life than just numbers.

What I Learned From Outlander

Over the past few years, I’ve been completely taken over by Outlander. I have a slight obsession with Dougal, while most people would leave their own personal Franks for the chance to look under Jamie Fraser’s kilt. While we clearly all watch Outlander for the history, there have been some other things that I’ve learned along the way. Here’s a comprehensive list…maybe you’ll learn something from me.

  1. It’s now okay to hear voices, but only if they come through stones. Otherwise, you’re still crazy…or a witch. stones
  2. Speaking of witches, I also learned that vaccine scars will kill you faster than the actual disease.
  3. However, whipping scars…now they won’t kill you. In fact, whipping scars are very useful.
  4. On the other hand, sometimes diseases can be used to your advantage.
  5. Sleeping with, excuse me, marrying the second in command is the way to go. When he overthrows number one, you’ll rule. Er, you’ll help him rule. married
  6. The way to get your man isn’t by giving your honey pot away–your life has to be at risk. That whole damsel in distress thing is the clincher. It works even better, if once you have him, your independent woman side comes out.
  7. If you think a ghost is watching your wife, it’s probably time to force her to leave.
  8. Always befriend your man’s sister. Only she can help prevent those hussies from coming around. Jenny
  9. It’s never to late to reconnect with the love of your life. However, you may have to deal with some leg hair first.
  10. The saying may be, “When in Rome, do as the Romans do,” but I think “When in France, do as the French do” is better.
  11. If you’ve kept your daughter’s father a secret for most of her life, don’t be surprised when she get’s pissed…especially if she’s a red head. bree
  12. Never take your mother for granted. You have no idea what she went through to have you…(in this case though, we know she went through the stones).
  13. Smoozing multiple men is one of the best ways to assure loyalty… and gifts. Lots of shiny presents.
  14. If you are curious about time travel, killing someone may not be the only way to accomplish it. I would consider continuing to look for a way. Karma catches up to you.
  15. Always shout out your skills when dealing with kings, lairds, and chieftains. They may find use for you, even if you are a spy.
  16. If you wish to see a King, just hope he had plenty of fiber that day. In fact, maybe send him some fiber the day before to prepare. It should be number two on your list.
  17. Being known for your beauty is one thing, but being known as a badass who can curse you is even better.
  18. When you have an open marriage, try to set rules and boundaries so no one get’s hurt…or crashes a graduation party.
  19. A red coat is not a fashion statement. If the red coats are coming, they are not referring to a trunk sale. Run the other way. black jack
  20. Never underestimate a good dog. They’re quite handy to have around.
  21. Speaking of being handy, when stealing, it’s vital to be crazy sneaky. You certainly wouldn’t want to ask anyone for a hand.
  22. If you find out there’s a slim chance that the love of your life didn’t die on a battlefield, maybe hire a private investigator. They know everything, that’s why their hair is so big. Or research yourself until you’re sure.research
  23. Never assume someone was taken by faeries. They may be tricky, but they aren’t malicious. This goes for adults and children.
  24. If you must travel all around, bring an accountant. They may not be able to fight with a sword, but their words are pretty dangerous, especially when written down.
  25. Finally, I learned that waiting is the worst thing to ever happen to a Sassenach. Book 10…we’re ready.

The next episode of Season 3 is starting soon! How do you think it’s going so far? I mean, I know we haven’t gotten to the print shop scene, but I’m enjoying it. What has your favorite part been so far? Comment below.

About the Authors

Sarah Fischer and Kelsey McKnight met in college and haven’t stopped talking to each other since. Sarah works a day job doing background investigations which is a fancy way of saying she gets to be nosy for a living. Kelsey runs two non-profit organizations and raises the most precious child on the planet. However, at night, they turn into two saucy romance novelists.

Sarah writes college romances that would make Mrs. Fitzgibbons blush. Roger and Bree would definitely approve.

Kelsey writes Scottish Historical Romances. No, it isn’t Outlander, but her stories have men in kilts, ladies in elegant dresses, and overwhelming drama. She also has a contemporary romance that plays with contracts, love, money, and business. Kelsey and Sarah also both have short stories in the anthology Craving Bad. It’s filled with bad boys and the girls they love.

WeeBox

You’ve been waiting, I’ve been waiting, the world‘s been waiting, for the latest WeeBox. That’s right, they’ve finally released the exclusive and limited edition Outlander themed box. It’s a little purple package filled with all sorts of Outlandish fun, straight from Scotland.

As before, I was really impressed with what came inside this box. Everything was cute, usable, and worth the money. And what’s also nice about it is that it’s not just full of cluttery knickknacks you’ll never use or appreciate. Here’s an itemized list of everything that came in my special purple box:

  • A delightful Outlander bag by WeeBox, filled with words and quotes we all recognize
  • A cute little bag of heart-shaped tablets by Sixpenny Blue that would satisfy any sweet tooth!
  • A whisky barrel candle holder by Whisky Wood Scotland, in which the tea light can be replaced, so this little holder can have a long life
  • An official Outlander mortal and pestle set with a book of quotes, so you can pretend to be a witch every time you muddle up some mint leaves for a strong brew
  • A print of Scottish standing stones by artist Kevin Hunter that will look perfectly in place on your mantle

Everything I got was just so much fun and even my daughter got into the action, “sharing” the candy with me and taking the Outlander bag to use for all her ballet gear! I say she’s chosen a lovely little, durable, machine washable bag to take back and forth. My child has wonderful taste!

While the WeeBox is fun and a nice gift to give and receive, the company also tries to give back when they can. Their most recent philanthropic endeavor is participating with The Yard, a disabled children’s charity. I found this particularly heartwarming since my own younger brother is mentally handicapped and was helped in his youth by many similar organizations.

Each month has a different, fantastic theme that celebrates some aspect of Scottish culture or history. For example, in the past they’ve had a Highland Games box while the next on deck is one that gives a wee nod to the St. Andrew’s celebrations!
