Father of Monsters

I love history, legends, and retellings most of all when it comes to a well done tale of magic and otherworldliness. I found that in Father of Monsters by A.B Frost.

The Poetic Edda gives us the bases for the gods and goddesses we know best from Norse mythology. They tell of heroes journeys and tricks played by immortals, of seer women and all of mankind. While Loki plays a small part in those, Frost has given him a true voice in Father of Monsters.

Witty and well-researched, this novella gives Loki a chance to tell his own tales as he regales readers with accounts of his mistakes and choices, and the ways he often tries to rectify them. It doesn’t read like Marvel fanfiction, as some Loki stories I’ve read have. Instead, we get a book more in line with the original story of the trickster god. He’s given layers and a certain sass I feel is very fitting.

Overall, I recommend this book for fans of north mythology, and even those who enjoy the Marvel version we all know and love.

Want & Need

One of the frustrating things as a reader, is that so many different story lines are being over played. It has become difficult to find books that aren’t predictable from the start. Well, I just finished a book that was far from predictable.

Krya is your typical woman…Assuming typical women work for a gorgeous, take me on the desk, no strings attached boss. Living the fantasy, she begins to use him for his body as she satisfies her needs. Well, all of her needs but one. She is starting to feel the biological clock need to settle down and her eyes are set on her boss, Paul.

There is just one problem with Kyra’s happily ever after, Paul doesn’t do relationships. He has no interest in settling down. Kyra is convinced, as most of us usually are, that she can change him and continues their physical relationship. That is until Scott comes into the picture.

He is Kyra’s bestfriend’s future brother in law and sexy as hell. Well, a different kind of sexy than Paul. I’m talking about the kind where you can see a white picket fence, 2.5 children, and a dog in your future. But does that mean she gives up on Paul? Is she able to caste aside her lust, because she swears that’s all it is, aside and give herself freely to Scott? Will secrets from the past come up and ruin Kyra’s chance to live house instead with Scott or just play house with Paul? How can you tell the difference between what you want and need when they are both in front of you?

I think that Laurence touched on something that so many women are facing in this day and age. I’ve had many friends waste years on Mr No Commitment only to find themselves older, alone, and unhappy. Then there are friends who turned him into Mr. Cleaver. But how do you find that line? Where is the crystal ball that tells you this guy will change? Should you expect him to change? Or worse, do you even want him to?

I thought this book was realistic and it definitely hits you in the feels! One of the things that I liked, other than the amazing steamy scenes, was that the plot was strong throughout the book. One of my biggest pet peeves is when something is forced to happen because of plot sake. For example, half of my favorite characters did not need to die. This book flowed naturally and kept me guessing as to what was actually going on underneath the surface. I didn’t feel that anything, especially the character’s emotions, were forced or fake.

This is a great book and I love the cover! I’m excited to read more of Laurence’s work.
