Hospital Hill

A creepy thriller with a hint of history! Count me the hell in for this one. Since I basically write, almost exclusively, about heaving bosoms and shirtless men on horseback, it was refreshing to lower the lights and get in the mood for Hospital Hill by Katherine Anderson.

Valerie Martin is on the brink of retirement when she’s called back to Northhampton State Hospital for the Insane, nearly 15 years after she had first left in favor of a better job. She only returns when a former co-worker begs for her help sifting through patient files in the crumbling campus of the soon-to-close hospital, a decision Valerie may soon regret.

As she goes through the boxes of paperwork and old mementos of the long-gone patients she once knew, Val sees things she probably shouldn’t and begins to wonder what really happened behind those walls. Filled with the ghosts of the people locked within, the secrets threaten to spill out, especially when Val get’s a little too close to the truth.

I want to say more, but I want you to read the book and really feel immersed into the, all too real story, Anderson has spun. While some parts of the patients lives may seem too horrific to be true, many of them are. People were went to asylums for petty things and locked away for life. For example, one woman was confined there by her husband, who only sent her away so he could shack up with his younger mistress. The realness of the situations is what makes the story especially frightening. Nothing is scarier than what we, as humans, do to each other.

The book itself was well-written, but had several grammatical mistakes and formatting errors that may have been the fault of kindle. Still, it’s easy to overlook them when you’re wondering where the story will take you next. So, pick up a copy of Hospital Hill, turn the lights down low, and be prepared to see what’s lurking around the corner.
